Philip Hebeisen, born in Germany, arrived in
the New World in 1747. He was
married to Ana Margaretha Reifschneider, probably in Southeastern
Pennsylvania. Margaretha’s parents were Aaron and Catherine.
Aaron died in March of 1765 in Windsor Township, York county. Catherine died
some time after 1767 when she was
living in Reading Twp.
Philip and Margaretha are known to have been in Eastern York county in 1758. Examination of the land records would tell us details of when they came to York county and perhaps even where they lived before. Some time before 1761 they moved west to Reading Twp where they remained the rest of their lives. When Adams County was formed from York County in 1800, most of Reading Twp went with it. A portion of the township remained in York county as part of Warrington Twp, then as part of the new Washington Twp in 1802. Again, research in the land records would show which portion of Reading Twp they were in. We don't know where Philip and Margaretha's first child, born about 1757, was baptized. Their next child was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Windsor Township in 1758. Philip and Margaretha joined the Lutheran Church in Latimore Township in 1762 and their next four children were baptized there. The two oldest children were confirmed at this same church in 1777. We don't know where the three sons, Michael, Abraham, and Philip were baptized. Since they were born around the time the older two were confirmed, the absence of baptismal records is confounding. Philip died about 1792. That December, his widow Margaretha was engaged to be married to George Lauck. This could be the John Lauck who died in 1818 with an undetermined widow. (German men named George most often were actually named John George.) Or, George could have died earlier and Margaretha was the older woman living with her son Abraham in 1800 before he married. Children The oldest son, John, died as an adult but apparently without having offspring. Ana Margaret married John Richman or Richeson. She lived in Reading Twp in 1794 but nothing more is known of her. Justina may be the same as Philipina. Philipina married Henry Gross and was the first of the family to move to Northumberland County - some time before 1791. Salome married Henry Kraus and they moved to Cumberland County before 1794 and they stayed there the rest of their lives. Maria Elizabeth married Daniel Gelwicks and lived in Manheim Twp, York County in 1794. They moved to Franklin County before 1800. She died before 1810. Catherine was not married by 1794. She is supposed to have married Frederick Gelwicks about that time and later lived in Franklin County, PA. I would be interested in any sources for this. Michael, the second son and heir to the family plantation, sold the land to his brother Abraham in April of 1797 and moved to Northumberland County by 1800 and then to Cumberland County. Abraham sold the land to his sister Salome's husband in December of 1797 and moved to Northumberland County by 1800 and then to Mercer county. (Salome and her husband sold the land a year later.) Philip moved to Northumberland by 1800 and then to Mifflin County. |
