Other Families

While researching the Hebeisen / Havice families of Pennsylvania, I came across other families with similar last names. I have eliminated most of these as likely relatives. I have also included the records of other Havice/Havis/Hebeisens whose connection to the Hebeisen family of Pennsylvania is unknown.

Hovis
Tobias Frederick Hovis d. 1784 Codorus Twp, York Co, PA. Married to Margarata. Will names two children: Margaret and Jeremiah (under 14). Others not named. Compiled sources list other children of Tobias Frederick Hovis as Frederick of York County and George of South Carolina. Otto Hively's Land Research Index has entries for Frederick Hovis of Codorus and Isaac Hovis of York/Windsor/Lower Windsor. No known relationship to Philip Hebeisen of York County, PA.

Helbeisen
A large family of this name came to Sandusky County from Switzerland about 1850. They are not related to the Hebeisen family.

Harbison
A prominent family of this name settled in early Butler County. They are of British ancestry. The James Harbison in New Sewickley, Beaver co, PA 1810, 1820, and 1830 came from Northern Ireland.

Havis
This name, pronounced "Hay-vis" (rhymes with Avis) is strongly represented in the South from John Havis who first appears in North Carolina around 1782. His children are: Jesse Havis, b. 1776; John Havis, b. 1780; and Thomas Havis, b. 1782. A sister of John, Elenor, was born in New York in 1753. She married Moses Johnson about 1766 in New York. She appeared in Virginia in 1780 and died in Alabama in 1837.

A James Havis appears on the 1776 census of Prince George's County, St. John and Geo. Parish, Maryland. His household had 3 males over 16. Seven males less than 16 and 4 females. Later his widow is shown to be named Catherine. We have not ruled out James as ancestor to the southern Havis family, nor to our Catherine, but no relationship is likely to the Habeisen / Havice family of Pennsylvania.

There is a William Havis in Lancaster, PA in 1800. He appears in a list of early blacksmiths in Martic Township but not on the 1800 census.

Haywiser
Hayweisers and Haywisers lived in Pittsburg and Beaver county from 1860. These seem to be from Germany, arriving after 1830. They may be a distant relation the the Hebeisens of Pennsylvania.

Henise
A Philip Heneise or Heneisen lived in York County, PA in the early 1800s. This does not appear to be a misreading or misspelling of Hebeisen; George & Philip Heneisen are on the 1810 Dover Twp, York Pa census and Philip Henise witnessed a will in Dover Twp.

Hebeisen
A family of this name settled in Minnesota in the late 1800s. They were Germans from Russia. There were also families of that name in early Bern Switzerland.

There were other Hebeisens (Johannes, Jacob, and Martin) that appear in early passenger lists. They settled in upstate New York and two of the three were Reformed. Records for them are sparse and their lines appear to have died out.
