Old Sawyer Sanitarium

Built about 1895 by Dr. Charles Sawyer, later to be White House Physician for President Warren Harding, this massive 4-story building featured elaborate brickwork, cupola-topped towers, and a full front porch. It was a marvel for its time with an electric elevator, sanitary plumbing, and provided for "the careful, scientific treatment of all chronic diseases." In 1906, as his fortunes increased, Dr. Sawyer built a "country sanitarium," leaving behind this wonderful structure. Today the building still stands and is used as a low-income apartment building.
