Subject: Dutcher family research

lovell snow was born on september 4, 1773 in ashford, connecticut. he was the son of robert and sarah (chubb) snow. on november 7, 1773 he was baptized at the ashford, congregational church. on april 7, 1791, lovell married ms. sally maynard (mainer). they had at least three children, but their names remain unknown. on september 2, 1802 the couple were divorced.

lovell probably came to ohio as part of this effort to settle the northwest territory. the indian problem impeded settlement ofthis area until 1794, when general anthony wayne drove them fromthe state. with the indians gone, the western reserve in thenortheast corner along lake erie was opened to settlers. itcontained four million acres. connecticut emigrants were the mainsettlers in this area. connecticut refugees who had been burnedout by the british during the revolutionary war began to settle.the area became known as the 'fire lands' for this reason"

the northwest territory was established by the continentalcongress on july 13, 1787, by the northwest ordinance. the regionwas later called the old northwest. the area comprised of the landwest of pennsylvania between the ohio and mississippi river. thenorthwest territory was originally ceded to the u.s. by theindividual states. the states the were formed by this area were ohio, indiana, illinois, michigan, and part of minnesota. ohio wasthe first state admitted to the union from the northwest territory in 1803.

it was also in is the same year that lovell divorced sally maynard that his next wife was born. maria freelove dutcher was born on december 20, 1802. she was supposedly born in erie county, pennsylvania. she married lovell on january 31, 1821 in york township, athens county, ohio. they at least four children: robert, salmenders, newman, and philander.

in about the year 1829, freelove met and fell in love with james forest, of meigs county, who was also married at the time. james's wife, ms. mazy (gordon) forest, sued for divorce on the grounds of desertion. the suit was granted, in 1831. mazy eventually remarried to isaac woods on june 12, 1834. isaac filed for divorce from mazy on august 6, 1838.

james and freelove's departure from meigs county was an eventful one. one sources claims that they were chased out of town by the sheriff and that lovell and freelove's youngest son philander, followed his mother.

another source states that lovell didn't know what to do so he told the children to go play with their friends along the river and go home with them. whether this is true or not, it is known that newman snow lived with the family of john harris.

james forest came from a well to do family in botetourtcounty, virginia. this is where james originally married mazy.the marriage started to break up when mazy accused him of cheatingon her with several women. she also accused him of raping a woman.

james attempted to sell off all the family possessions, before he deserted mazy, and leaving with freelove. he even threatened toburn down the house. a few years later james' father died, and mazy sued james for partial inheritance on behalf of their children. the suit was settled in her favor.

it is not known whether lovell ever filed for divorce from freelove. according to one account, she and james were chased from town by the sheriff. they then proceeded to float down the ohio river and eventually ended up in taney county, arkansas and ozark county, missouri. both counties are located on the white river.

whether freelove and lovell were ever divorced or not, the1850 census for newton township, whitley county, indiana indicates lovell remarried to harriet. at this time lovell was 76 years old and harriet was 47. they had 3 girls emily age 10, lucy age 4, and hannah age 3.

lovell died sometime between 1850 and 1860 columbia city, indiana. the 1860 census shows harriet remarried to james jones.

freelove and james spent the rest of their lives together and had nine of their own children. some of the experiences of james and freelove and their children are chronicled in silas claborn turnbo's "tales of the ozarks: biographical stories". these "not too literary" stories of the original settlers of the ozarks arequite interesting tales.

Subject: Dutcher

My name is Lindy Sheehan. I too share Freelove with Paul. I descend from her 2nd marriage to James For(r)est. Hopefully we will find someone who can help us with her parentage. We are currently in online contact with 5 other Freelove descendants and no one has solved the puzzle to date.

I have run across a Freelove Dutcher who I believe is yours. (How many Freelove Dutchers could there be?!?) This one even has a mother named Sarah, who matches up with the Sarah Dutcher in Athens County, OH in 1820. For complete info, check out the Pennsylvania page.
