DUTCHER FAMILY ASSOCIATION Vol. 2 ~ December 1935 ~ No.1 Charles
Henry Dutcher * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Charles H. Dutcher was born Feb 17, 1841, near Barry, Pike County, Illinois, son of Squire and Elizabeth A. (Townsend) Dutcher, both natives of New York, who left New York in 1839 for Illinois. Charles was raised on a farm in Pike County, Ill. His boyhood was spend in assisting his father with the farm work and attending the district school, which was near his home. Later he was a student for one year at the Christian University at Canton (now called "Culver-Stockton College") and then he entered Kentucky State University at Harrodsburg. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1864. During the Civil War the school buildings were confiscated for hospital purposes and the classes of the university were held in churches, store rooms and even on the street, as the work was carried on under very adverse conditions. Practically the entire session of 1862 and 1863 Mr. Dutcher served as a volunteer nurse in both the Union and Confederate hospitals in Harrodsburg. After graduation he taught for eight years in different schools in Kentucky. In 1872 and 1873 he was principal of the city schools in Kirkville, Mo., and from 1873 to 1877 he held the chair of Natural Science and Latin in the Kirksville Normal School. In 1877 he assumed the Presidency of the Cape Girardeau Mo. Normal school. In 1880 and 1881 he went into the banking business in Butler, Mo., but in Sept. 1881 he returned to his beloved teaching profession, going to the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Mo., to fill the chair of Natural Science, from which he resigned in 1892. For several years he was interested in a fruit farm near Warrensburg and was President of the Missouri State Horticulture Socieyy from 1901 to 1908. He continued to have an active interest in horticulture until his death September 25, 1924 at his home in Warrensburg, Mo. In early life he became a member of the "Disciples of Christ" church, and was a valuable member the rest of his life, being an Elder in the church at the time of his death. For a number of years he was an active member of the Masonic lodge and the Odd Fellow Lodge. In August 1872 Mr. Dutcher married Laura A. Tucker of Jeffersontown, Ky., who died Feb. 20, 1880 leaving three children, Lida M. (who died in 1914), Flora B. and Edwin T. In Sept. 1883 he married Mrs. Rolla Pemberton Lynes of Columbia, Mo., who still survives him. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In some future issues of this we will reprint an account of some events in the life of Capt. William Dutcher (mentioned in the previous issue). This information was secured from the Tarrytown Argus, (N.Y.) of January 27, 1894, supplied by Miss Edith Dutcher. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Address
