Dear Sharon,
Checked some records after getting your message. I found some correspondence between Warren H. Dutcher who served as a saddler in Co. E 3rd Reg Mich. Vol. Cav. and the government. I don't have his enlistment papers. The story on him was that he deserted June 9, 1862 at Farmington, MS and was arrested May 24, 1864 in Tioga Co., PA. He'd gotten married and settled down on a farm. In two different pieces of paper, he gives two different dates of birth, April 9, 1832 and April 9, 1834. He'd married a woman named Sylvia Cartley or Carthy or something like that in Westfield, PA. Married by James A. Goodspeed, Esq. He said there were no previous marriages. He lists living children as of July 4, 1898 as Elnora, born Sep 7, 1871. On Jan. 26, 1909, Nora Dutcher King of Westfield, PA filed for death benefits on her father. Oh, I did find an enlistment paper. He enlisted on Sep 1, 1863. He reported being born in Tioga Co., PA and being 27 years old. He was 5'6 1/2" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and a saddler by occupation when enrolled
I also have a possible candidate for brother David. What is most striking is what his sons were named. The ages on this set of records for when the children were born are unclear. The mother may have been talking about how old they were when they died or how old they would have been if they had still been alive. She was granted a dependent mother's pension on her son William H. Dutcher of the 2nd Mich. Cav. He died of typhoid in Nashville. I have copies of a couple of letters he wrote home. The originals are evidently in his file in Washington, DC. After she died , David Dutcher filed for dependent father's pension. He was listed as being 80 or 81 in 1899. His memory evidently wasn't the best. He reported that he'd married his wife, Lucinda in PA sometome in 1837, but couldn't remember the exact date. They were married by Sheldon Tuttle, JP. He indicated that she had died on July 18, 1899 at Oneida, Eaton Co. MI. His PO(he lived in the country) was Grand Ledge. On Lucinda's mother's affidavit from Sep 11, 1883, she indicates they had had several PO changes.( MI was subdividing counties during this period and tha may explain this.) In 1862,their address was Basswood Corners, Hillsdale Co. In 1865, it was Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co. In 1869, it was Grand Ledge, Eaton Co and had remained that. The following is why I think he's Warren's brother. The children are listed as Ambrose 29, now dead, Warren 27, Johette 25, now dead, Gilbert 23, now dead,William H., now dead, George 18.
I know I have something on a Gilbert Dutcher who also died in the Civil War. I'll see if tha is their son Also, an Ambrose Dutcher served with the 7th Cavalry. I don't know if I have any more info on him. I'll look. I realize that the dates don't add up exactly. My experience is that is often the case. People just wern't as picky about details like that back then, Does any of this look familiar or helpful?

Dear Sharon,
I found some more information that I wanted to pass along to you. This is on David Dutcher's son, Ambrose. He served in the 10th Mich. Engineers. There is an affidavit about how he contracted measles in the hospital at Jackson 5 days before his discharge. He finally left the hospital on May 13 with his brother-in-law, Hiram Holbrook. He only got to Collumbia(?sp) in Jackson Co. He died there on May 20 from pneumonia. His wife, nee Louisa A. Soule or Soulz abandoned their children almost immediately and reportedly "existing as a prostitute" which couldn't have lasted too long because she was remarried to a man named Whitney on June 1, 1867. David Dutcher took custody of their children who were: Merritt, born Sep. 1, 1861, Ellenora, born Sep. 15, 1863, and Ida J., born Oct. 29, 1864. Another interesting tidbit: the 2 witnesses to his affidavit were Parley WARREN and B. Saxon, both of Hillsdale who attested to their personal acquaintence with David Dutcher. Also, I think your William is in David Dutcher's book, albeit with no antecedents. I'm pretty sure he's the one at the very bottom of page 17.
Yolanda,
You certainly have a lot of Dutcher information! Yes, I believe the William Dutcher on page 17 of David Dutcher's book is ours. I notice that it does not line up in the columns with the rest and so I wonder if it was added later. Also, on page 61 are some more curiosities. Three people named Warren Dutcher. Sarah Sacena Dutcher is definitely daughter of our William. And the David born in 1740 who I think is the one who MIGHT be the father of William. Why is all this information added? Who is the David Dutcher who did this book? What are his sources?
I wonder who that Parley Warren was - very interesting!
The same day you sent the last e-mail, we had gone to the library and looked up in census records the David, father of Abrose, etc., that you wrote about. What you sent explains some things we found.
In 1850, David Dutcher, age 34 is living with his wife Lucinda and kids Ambrose (15), Warren (13), Juliet (11), Gilbert (8), William (4), and George W. (2) in Westfield Twp, Tioga Co, PA.
1860, did not find David.
In 1870, David and Lucinda are living in Eaton Co, MI with Merritt (8), Eldora (6), and Ida (5). These must be Ambrose's kids. Looks like their mom did not take them when she remarried.
In 1880, David and Lucinda are in Eaton Co with a grand-daughter, Kate Hansbrook (1). According to what you sent, a brother-in-law of Ambrose was named Holbrook. I looked only at the soundex, so maybe the census really said something closer to Holbrook. A George Dutcher family and a Gilbert Dutcher family are nearby.
In 1900, David Dutcher (82) and his wife Margaret (58) are in Grand Ledge, Eaton Co with yet another grand-daughter Edith Smith (12).
Now I know a lot about David. I will have to see if I can find out when he died and send for an obituary.
Thanks again for all your info.

I am looking for information on William DUTCHER (DEUTSCHER or DEUTCHER), born 3/31/1786; who married Nycenia Warren, born 7/12/1790; lived in the Poughkeepsie NY area. Especially interested in parents of either William or Nycenia.

Doug,
I saw your query in the latest Genealogical Helper for the children of Daniel W. Adams, specifically asking about the death of John Q. Adams. I have his death date as 1874, though no place. I got this information from Margaret Mangold, a descendent of John Q. Adams and Hannah Dutcher.
Hannah and Rachel Dutcher are sisters of my husband's Mary Ann Dutcher. I learned from your query that Rachel married Joseph Miles Adams. I recently learned she had married an Adams, but did not know who.
Sharon
Thanks for your interesting message. Margaret Mangold is my sister! But the death date for John Q. is not verified. There is some evidence that he died in the early 1850's, but again, we are not sure.
We are certainly interested in the Dutcher families - have just a little - since Hannah is my direct ancestor. (Margaret has a new grandaughter named Hannah Margaret.)
I am happy to share with you. For a start, check out our web page (see below). Click on ADAMS, then any of the names that are high lighted.
We found a cousin last year that had Daniel Keith ADAMS' Bible and I have copied all the information from that. I hope to add that to the page soon.

Subject: Re: Swimly family of Tioga Co PA
I just got started searching for Swimleys in Tioga County PA -- this week as a matter of fact. There are some of this family that married into the Dutcher family and I hope that by knowing more about the Swinleys, I'll learn about the origin of the Dutchers.
So far I have learned that there are an awful lot of ways to spell the name! Here is what else I have:
Is this your John in the family of Christopher and Eliza? If so, do you have more information on Eliza?
Hi, Sharon,
Yes this is my John. Also my Lucinda and James. I have most of my info was left to me by my Dad so right now I have only names and a few dates. Except for one thing which took me a while to figuer out. I have a letter dated April 20, 1852 this letter was written by Helen E(liza) Swymley to her to her brother and sister. She lists the birth dates of her father, mother and siblings also dates of deaths.
The letter is very hard to reas but I will send you the names and dates give me a couple of weeks

I tried to copy the letter but it is to faint. The letter is written on a course blue gray paper, the ink is faded to a light gray it also has been taped together and the tape has yellowed. The paper shows some signs of yellowing around the edges. The hand writing is neat and in the style of the time. Here is my transcrip I left spelling and punctuation the same as in the letter. The letter is to Helen from her sister. I also know that one of the Swimeleys moved to Michigan I donot which one.I will try to Photograph the Letter and get it to you. Hope you enjoy this and that it helps in your search

I have some info on the Swimler/Swimley/Swimelar family, etc. I
have your names David Dutcher and Helen Eliza Dutcher in my FTM
database married to Swimelars, although I don't have any further
information on the Dutchers, and was not aware of Helen and
David's relationship. Their spouses, Christopher and Lucinda were
siblings, and children of Joseph Swimley and Anna Schoonover. I
descend from Samuel Swimelar, brother of Christopher and Lucinda.
I have a lot more on the Schoonovers and related families (going
back to the early Dutch settlement of Kingston, Ulster County,
NY), than I do on the Swimelars. Contact me if you're interested.

Hi, Dutcher researchers,
We just got back from a short research trip to Pennsylvania and
found a wee
bit of information on our Dutcher line. Genealogists are so
grateful for
small favors. I thought I'd share it with the list you are
the only ones
who would appreciate it.
----------------------------------------------------
What we knew before we went:
William Dutcher, born about 1786, and his wife Nicena Warren,
born about
1890, were living in Tioga County, NY in 1830.
In 1835, their daughter (my husband's ancestor) Mary Ann, age 17,
marries
her first husband, John Hoover in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
In 1840, William, Nicena, and the younger children are in St.
Joseph County,
Michigan.
One son of William and Nicena says on three census records that
he is born
in Delaware (1818). The rest of the kids are born in NY or PA.
----------------------------------------------------
What we found out on our trip:
William Dutcher first started paying taxes in Tioga County in
1826. The last
year he paid taxes is 1835.
So now we know when the family first appears in the county, and
when they
left for Michigan.
In 1834, a John Hoover shows up in Tioga County. The next year, a
John
Hoover, Jr. appears. (The name is sometimes spelled Hawver.) The
same year
that William Dutcher leaves Tioga county, John Hoover, Jr.
leaves.
So now we know how Mary Ann happens to marry someone on the way
to Michigan.
He was probably traveling with the family. More research needed
here.
Next door to William Dutcher in Tioga county is a Thomas Warren.
I don't
know how I happened to not notice this before. But being in
Pennsylvania and
looking at EVERYTHING, this jumps out at us. He is still there in
1850 and
1860 and, born in NY in 1785, is a few years older than Nicena
Warren.
Back home, I find five Thomas Warrens in NY in 1820 in the census
index.
Looking at the one for Delaware county, NY, I see that living a
few doors
away is a William Ducher. The hash marks for the children match
exactly to
our William. This entry is clearly written, but is in the index
as "William
Decker."
There are a pack of Warrens in the same township in Delaware
county, NY
there since 1790 at least so this provides fertile ground
for research of
Nicena's origin.
Remember David, the son of William, who said he was born in
Delaware? He
moved to Tioga county, Pa when he was 8. He had been born in
Delaware
COUNTY, not the state. I'm glad that is cleared up We
could not figure out
how they could have been in Delaware in 1818.
---------------------------------------------------
Nothing earth-shattering here, but a few loose ends tied up and
some new
places to look. It's only been about two years since we found
William &
Nicena in Tioga County, NY in 1830. Two years to go back ten
years.
I'll post all relevant info we got from Tioga and Bradford
counties on the
web site this week or so.
Don't give up,
Sharon
