I am trying to determine if Helena Duytser, married to Samuel Haarten on 06 Dec-1729 is, in fact the 2nd Helena daughter of Barent Dutcher, b. abt 1675 in Kingston Co, NY, and Martje Conklin, born abt. 1675. Helena's marrriage to Samuel Haarten is reported in the IGI as taking place in Rye, Westchester Co, NY. My tie is this: Helena and Samuel Haarten were the parents of Maria Haarten who married Bennedeke Jury (Benedict Yeary), I believe. Bennedeke and Maria were found with their children in Conewego Township, Chester Co, PA. Any one who is willing to shed any light on this problem - I would be eternally grateful! I look forward to joining all you Dutcher/Duytser/Duyts researchers and hope to be able to contribute something of value in the future. Thanks in advance. Dot Wilson Duncan

This Helena is # 45 in Griffin's Dutcher Family.

I'm so thrilled to get confirmation of what I suspected all along! I am relatively new to the Duyster/Duytser/Dutcher line, so I really had to feel my way along! I noticed that many of this line were found in Dutchess Co, NY, but just opened the gen web page last night! Imagine my surprise to find such a wonderful group of researchers and great info at my fingertips! I just took a chance on the similarity of names that I knew matching the Dutcher home page!

To elaborate a little, I and many other researchers have been exhaustively trying to get past the entrance of our mutual ancestor, Benedict Yeary, to locate some info prior to his showing up in the Low Dutch Community of Conewago, York Co, PA. Up until this point, we knew that , prior to 1752, Jhn Hite and Jhn Van Meter were engaged to attract settlers to the Shenandoah Valley, Va from Pa/NJ/Holland and Germany; the route for these settlers brought them through Lancaster and York, Pa counties. In 1765, at least 167 families moved from the Somerset/Bergen NJ area to Conewago, York Co, Pa. The Dutch Reformed Church built their church in Conewago 1768/9. In 1769, the earliest records of baptisms at Conewago by J.M. Van Hartingen (Pastor from Somerset, NJ - as were the succeeding pastors) were recorded. Baptismal records from 1770-1779 show baptisms for William, Christiana, Elizabeth, David and Maregrita, children of Benedekter Jury (various spellings) and Maria Harten (various spellings). Historian Demarest identifies Benedekter Rune as Benedekter Rune Jury. We were unable to find any Hartens named in any of the lists of the early Conewago settlers; no Hartens are name as "inhabitens" or "intendees in the 1783 Memorial to Congress. In 1780, the Conewago settlement begins to move to Kentucky; one group (the main Conewago group) moves by the Northern route (Ohio River to the falls) then down to Pleasureville, KY area (One mile above Boonesborough); the second group (Shepardstown, Va) takes the Southernroute and goes up through the Pennington Gap area of Virginia. The majority of the main family remained (the Yearys) in the SW Virginia area.

Our problem - I found the marriage of Samuel and Maria Duytser on the IGI; no other mention was made of any other Samuel Hartens. I didn't know where he was born, I didn't know which set of parents (for sure) were Maria's, as there were so many Duytsers on the IGI,and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for confirming my suspicions. I had no info on Samuel Harten (much less his anglicized name of Horton) other than his date and place of marriage. I have a huge FTW file of Yeary's (about 2500 names), so will cull this down tomorrow and send you the pertinent info, at least for the next few generations working forward from Maria. I look forward to becoming an active member of your group and feel sure that all this wonderful info will open up a number of questions. In the meantime, if you have any sources in the DRC,can you find out if some of the parishes from New York joined this group from Somerset, NJ. We are curious what brought Maria and Samuel away from the rest of their families.
